Feedback for the strategic report of the FET initiative
Quantum Information Processing and Communication

Quantum Information Processing and Communication (QIPC) is now a well established scientific field which opens unconventional perspectives for information processing. It exploits fundamentally new modes of computation and communication with the aim to understand the quantum nature of information and to learn how to formulate, manipulate, and process it using physical systems that operate on quantum mechanical principles (control of coherent superpositions of quantum degrees of freedom – qubits). Today, there is a significant world-wide effort to advance research in QIPC, which has led to a deeper and broader understanding of information theory, of computer science and of the fundamental laws of the quantum world. Advances in QIPC could soon lead to new technologies and devices that hold the promise to radically change the way we compute and communicate...

Title: Feedback

Comment: I support the road map on "Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for QIPC research in Europe", but I think it would be important if the road map would be a little more focused on the subject concerning the shallow impurities in semiconductors; this is one of the more promising system for future applications. It is on these topics that, at present, a big effort is made by Australian and American groups.

Title: QIP research in EU

Comment: I strongly support the recommendations of the QIPC Roadmap. It is a joint effort of many leading scientists in the field. It gives a good overview of the broad aspects and possibilities in QIPC research. The basic research outlined in the document can be the starting point of a quantum revolution, not only in our understanding of the foundations of our world, but also as a basis of revolutionary technological development, of equal importance as the information science revolution. In that sense the basic quantum physics research deserves a special position in the strategic planning of our knowledge based society. This should be seriously taken into account when planning for FP7.

Title: Support for Quantum Information Technology in FP7

Comment: Quantum Information Science and Technology, QIST, has been one of the most fruitful areas of physics in recent years. Like no other field, it extends from very fundamental questions to commercially relevant developments. On the fundamental side, it has triggered a radical change in the thinking of physicists – and more and more also of non-physicists – how Nature reveals information about its processes to us, the observers, and how the description which physics provides of such processes has to be interpreted in terms of information. This change of paradigms has only begun, and there are many open issues waiting to be investigated and to be solved. Nevertheless, the information-oriented perspective of fundamental physics, i.e. of quantum mechanics, has already led to revolutionary discoveries such as Shor's factorizing algorithm, and it continues spawning new ideas and concepts how to use quantum information for practical purposes. The first devices based on these principles, for encrypting data in quantum states, are already on the market. Much more powerful quantum information processors are at the horizon, but many problems, conceptual as well as technological ones, remain to be studied and solved on the way. Beyond information processing applications, quantum technology will play a key role in the near and far future, for example in the integration of electronics with photonics, in precise clocks, and in sensors of ever-increasing sensitivity and accuracy. To a significant extent, it has been QIST research which has spun off or accelerated such applications of quantum mechanics in technological devices. Recently, very interesting and important progress has been registered in the cross-over from the traditional qubit-type systems for quantum information, such as single atoms and single photons, to solid-state as well as atomic-ensemble, or spin-type systems. The parallel progress of these new systems, which hold the promise to eventually offer practical advantages, with qubit-type quantum systems, which have been providing the cleanest and most sophisticated quantum information implementations, is one of the most exciting current perspectives of the area. In all its fields, from fundamental contemplation to the development of practical, mass-market applications, QIST research needs and deserves continued support; it deserves to remain a priority area and to receive a focused effort of research funding. This is particularly urgent, and sensible, at the European level at which the strongest impact can be achieved, combining strategies for fostering technological leadership, economic growth, and cultural development. Therefore QIST must have a priority role in FP7.

Title: Reversible and adiabatic computing

Comment: I would like to congratulate the authors of the `Workpackage 1' (February 2006). In the following sections: 3.6 QIPC in a wider scientific and technological context 4.3.3 Computational models and architectures 4.3.11 Spin-off to other fields, they rightly mention the important aspects of * decreasing electric power consumption in nanoelectronics * adiabatic computing * reversible computing. It is my conviction that classical reversible and adiabatic computers are a first and very important step towards quantum computers. Reversible architectures and adiabatic processing will provide a first leap towards real quantum computers. Today we can develop experimental circuits in off-the-shelf technologies. Without having to wait for quantum computer hardware, we can implement large parts of quantum algorithms and thus gain experience today. This is the reason why I suggest to make reversible and adiabatic computing a full-fledged section of the quantum computer programme, in its own right, e.g. as a separate section 4.5. It is an honest and well-researched account on what seems a very meaningful avenue to follow. On the other hand, politically: it should be a very useful tool to communicate to the outside world that what we are doing is quite likely to pay off, culturally and commercially. After all, one should probably not forget that it is not primarily scientists who fund this research. Finally, many thanks to Peter Zoller for doing the main work.

Title: Expression of support for the QIPC roadmap

Comment: I read carefully The QIPC Strategic Report and I wouldd like to express my strong support for the QIPC roadmap, in the hope that FET will fund it strongly in the 7th phase. Especially, I would like to draw the attention of the FET Directorship to the topic of Quantum Imaging which is discussed in the Appendix. In the United States the Department of Defence ( DoD) launched a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) including Quantum Imaging in a list of priority subjects, and has recently funded a 5 years, 5 million dollars project , entitled Quantum Imaging, New Methods and Applications, in which three European teams participate without funding. Europe has created this field and has a lead in it, therefore it is suitable that new research projects of high quality, involved in this field, receive adequate financial support.

Title: Support for the QIPC Strategic Report

Comment: The QIPC Strategic Report describes and analyses the Quantum Information Processing and Communication area worldwide and, in particular, in Europe. The QIPC work in Europe (and elsewhere) concern innovative ways to utilise and control quantum system and quantum properties for specific purposes. There can be little doubt that control and usage of quantum properties and quantum systems will be key issues in parts of the technology of the future. I am one of the contributors to the QIPC Strategic Report. The document describes the status of the research and development in the field in Europe and possible and expected directions of its future development. As such it is a valuable document. It is and will be important for the field and could in the long run play a significant role for issues regarding the technology of tomorrow.

Title: Endorsement of the QIPC Roadmap

Comment: The QIPC Strategic Report is a position document that describes the current state-of-the-art of QIPC in Europe, identifies the goals to be reached, points out what challanges need to be overcomed for reaching those goals, and suggest funding strategies for keeping the EU at the forefront of this important research field. The writing of this document has required a joint effort among many of the leading EU scientists, and the result is a very balanced and up-to-date 'living document', which is open to the community discussion, and has received very good feedback from everyone in the field.

Title: QIPC Roadmap - channeling Europe's brain power

Comment: The QIPC Roadmap summarizes the goals that Europe can reach in the field of quantum information in the next ten years. As a guideline it has the power to bundle and channel the efforts of all European universities while at the same time leaving enough room for broad, fundamental research. To stay in a leading position in science is a strong European interest since an important part of its economy relies on the technological advances. Hence, the funding of all projects within the QIPC program is vital for Europe.

Title: joint communities act together for QIPC

Comment: This report proposes a comprehensive and balanced view of the roads pursued towards QI processing. It honestly points strengths and weaknesses of these roads. It constitutes a very useful document for physicists from any particular community involved in QIPC. It is an essential piece of information for all science managers in Europe. The mere fact that different communities have been able to work together to produce such a document already proves the importance of QIPC, and the necessity to fund this domain.

Title: Comments on the QIPC Roadmap

Comment: The European QIPC roadmap is a joint effort of many leading scientists in the field. It is a bottom-up position document, and therefore quite different from the US roadmap, which is top-down. Its very broad scope means that in the document one will not find all the most recent results/developments in the different QIPC fields; instead, the long-term broader developments/research activities are monitored and reviewed. The document is very balanced with all different aspects of the field (theory & experiments) have been included, and it will serve well the scope of both unifying the research community and elaborating a common European strategy and goals, and providing input to the European Commission for the preparation of the Seventh Framework Programme.
